Free Photo Software

Here are some free software packages that were mentioned in our meeting tonight.

Gimp - An acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc. GIMP is expandable and extensible. It is designed to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. The advanced scripting interface allows everything from the simplest task to the most complex image manipulation procedures to be easily scripted.

Shape Collage – Create picture collages in less than a minute with just a few mouse clicks. Photos are automatically and intelligently placed using a machine learning algorithm. Use photos on your computer or from the web to make collages.

Qtpfsgui - An open source graphical user interface application that aims to provide a workflow for HDR imaging.

Picturenaut
- Born in the German photo community. It has been in the works for almost two years, with consistent improvements according to user feedback. That's why the first official release is already Version 2.1, marking a new milestone in making high quality HDR Imaging accessible and easy.

If you've used any of these programs, please feel free to share your experience.

I use GIMP at work for simple re-sizing and it works fantastic. I've also used Picturenaut to create some HDR images. While it's not as easy to use Photomatix, it will give you some experience and it's works really fast.

One last piece of software that's worth mentioning is Google's Picasa. It's simple to use, has some nice basic features and gives you the option to create some nice online albums.
